I have a good friend that depowers them properly, not just looping the lines and calling it done. BUT, if you start creeping forward, it really doesn't take much more effort to turn over a powered rack. This isn't my only car, but I drive it like it's my daily and it doesn't bother me a single bit. With drifting, I never had the kind of precision and response I get with this when I had power steering. I can now transfer as hard as I can without over rotating, even kicking the clutch every time I transfer during manji's. When countersteering you can feel right where the wheels are supposed to be. When I had power steering I would have to flick it during transfers. With manual I just steer back the opposite way, let go, and catch. Having a manual rack has made me a much smoother driver. My friend had one and loved it, but when he went to a track that required 4th gear entries, he said it was too much. Maybe this video from the event I just got back from can give you a better view. I throw the car on entry as hard as I did when I had power steering, no problem. And if it is a true manual rack where'd you get it. ONLY because the previous owner pulled the lines and never sealed the rack. Made a considerable difference but steering is still heavy as fuck and I would prefer power. I have a true manual rack and I was thinking of swapping in a power rack to learn to drift.

That being said, many people, for different reasons, choose to dispatch with the power assist. The power steering system consists of three main parts, namely the pump, the lines, and the steering rack. This write up deals with the steering rack itself, and the modifications necessary to make it manual. Removing the power assist will change the way the car reacts in certain situations, and should only be performed by someone know knows what they are getting themselves into. I do not in any way take responsibilities for your actions. That would be the case for any modifications or how-to info for replacement parts for the 240SX. Some people just remove the belt, others remove the pump and loop the lines. I chose to remove everything associated with the power assist. First to save weight, and second to simplify the engine bay. The car I am modifying is a 1991 240SX hatchback that I am preparing for Rally-America stage rally competition. The car will see extreme conditions, and easy of repair is necessary. A true after market manual steering rack would be ideal, but they are both expensive, and hard to find, so a modified factory rack is the best option for me. This means that by removing the pump, I am effectively removing the possibility of fluid circulation. Most of the modifications will revolve around helping the rack stay lubricated, while also reducing the amount of force required to turn the wheels. On the right is the valve body, and on the left is the adjuster that sets the worm gear preload. The valve body just pulls out, and that the worm gear machined on to the end of it. This will keep the piston lubricated, without causing pressure to build up, which in turn would cause resistance. Then I covered them with silicone for good measure. You will likely want to recheck the preload after a little driving, but otherwise, enjoy your precise, light, and simple, manual steering rack. I had replaced the rack 3 times due to leaks, I got sick of it and had it depowered. Sounds like you only have experience with racks that weren't actually depowered. It is the most annoying thing to drive and keep in mind these are daily drivers. View Poll Results: Would you purchase a quick ratio manual steering rack. Would you zilvians be interested in quick ratio steering racks. Benefits: Fast correction Reduced steering imput deletion of entire power steering system 28 lbs savings. So let me know if you guys would be interested. Thanks. Luke If I remember correctly though, those ones would need a spacer made up because the rack was not as big in diameter as the original. It would be cool if someone stocked a manual steering rack for the S chassis. A lot of shops sell refurbed stock ones as Hicas because they cannot tell the difference. I know for a fact that Hicas racks are rare and most rebuilders have them on their books but when you order one its a stock rack. Look at your Hicas rack there will be different casting numbers vs the non hicas rack. If the refurb has the same casting numbers its a hicas otherwise its not. On topic, Luke this is interesting but I am not sure how many people are going to want to spend the cash for the setup your thinking of doing. I can't verify for a long time as I still have to take apart my car.If we could get a good rack (fits correctly, strong, etc) with a quicker ratio, I wouldn't mind payin a couple hundred for it. I know the racks themselves are not that expensive. My steering rack is taking a dump, and I'm not sure I want it rebuilt if you're gonna come out with 'da new steering hotness'. Looks like no one wants to eliminate a complete hydro system from their car.The more shit you have the more shit there is to break. I will let ya know. Might just have to use a quick steer gearbox.

But now I can keep my manual rack, which is a plus because I do canyon runs too and the manual rack is nice. Fuck all these guys that say the manual rack is idiotic. I know it isn't for everyone, but for me personally it's one of the best things I did for the car as far as my progression with drifting. Depowered rack is not right, manual rack is right, ps is just fine from the factory. Let the downvotes rain but thats the reality of it. I get that you guys enjoy your depowered racks but don't downvote facts just because its contrary to what you run. Maybe try a BRAND NEW rack with new lines and rack bushings. And before my first rack started leaking I had replaced all bushings and steering components. Corolla guys are getting quick ratio manual racks all the time so I don't see that as being a negative. I feel like you're still stuck on the notion that I just ripped it all out and looped the lines. Unfortunately they outnumber those with info so just embrace the downvotes. Manual rack is not the same as de-powered power steering rack. De-powering a powered rack is retarded and will result in heavy ass steering with no real benefit. Factory manual racks are designed without power in mind an have different ratios which compensate for this. As a result, factory manual racks are often quicker, more responsive, and provide better feedback. This is why people always swap them into ae86s from other Toyotas. Not so much in s13s because the PS is fine and to my knowledge there is no direct bolt in manual rack available. If this a true manual rack, then sweet, post more info on it. Your not really helping anything, some even argue de-powering is bad for the rack itself. More turns to lock means a slower ratio that would make drifting much more difficult. It's a depowered rack, and has been depowered the correct way, not just looping the lines. Since putting it in I can transfer way quicker and smoother than I ever could with power steering.

I would LOVE to see a completely manual rack go into production for cheap, cause pushing all that fluid around is not always easy for someone of my muscular abilities. Also someone said hicas racks are rare but frsport sells rebuilt ones even though it is about 500. I have been rocking a drained and pluged power rack for a while and have really learned to like it. It did not take long to get used to and it is not impossible to drift with manual steeing. Take the power rack off, drain all the fluid out, pull the boot back on the drivers side, run the rack out to that side, put as much grease as you can get on the rack, reinstall boot. Take a rubber hose connect the inlet fitting to the outlet. With the power steering pump, hose, reservor, bracket on the block and idler pulley gone you'll lose about 25lbs front end weight. Several people raced my car besides just me, one of them a 110 lb.Drive for a while with it unhooked, see if you like it that way. Even if you find a full manual rack that will fit, it won't steer just a little bit easier unless it's got a slower steering ratio, and I don't think you want that. I raced several different cars with and without power steering, and I prefer it without.

I intend to get my ps system back fully functional in the future, but in the interim, I don't want to continue leaving dexron drips everywhere I park. So in the meantime, I'll just remove the belt from the pump, run looped lines and maybe a breather?BTW, please check your PMs. You mentioned not getting notification, and I've sent you a couple recently. For the belt, my S14 PS pump shares the belt with the water pump. I found a belt the perfect length and unbolted the water pump pulley, slipped the belt over it, then bolted the pulley back on.I should admit that I'm not sure I would want to ruin a perfectly good line if I had one though, especially when you might want to keep them around in the event that you change your mind down the road. It's funny bc I did find this thread in a google search: 2Fass, I'm sending you a pm reply also.

Bring the power steering pump bolt that secures the line with you. Ask for a line to be made with similar hardware as long as the threads match. IIRC I now have a 300 bar hydraulic line from a CAT back-hoe with ends matching my hardware. I love all Nissan OEM items except that one I think. HahaSeems easier than trying to bypass the system altogether. At first driving around it required a lot of effort to make tight low-speed turns, although I'm not sure if that was entirely to blame on the rack alone or a combination of the rack, new SPL tie rod ends, and low offset wheels with Kumho XS'. I ended up driving around the rest of the summer on stock wheels and absolutely loved the rack. The conversion wasn't particularly difficult and was essentially free (I ended up buying a non-HICAS rack because I didn't want to hack up my RHD HICAS rack)When you loop the lines you end up have to pump the fluid through yourself on top of not having the pump assisting you.My lines are completely empty of fluid so it's just moving air.I can drive 4-5 hrs on track in a day and still not tired.I noticed that the steering wheel re-centers MUCH better with manual steering. If I like it I'll de-power my hicas rack and install that. A rack with looped lines will ALWAYS have some fluid in it and that fluid will ALWAYS lead to more steering resistance. You simply cannot get it all out without taking the rack apart. He was like wow, you barely even turned and was super close on those cones. It wasn't all on purpose, that thing was hard to turn. Once up to speed or for road course its probably fine but for autocross I need my power steering. If anyone is looking to depower their rack and doesnt keep up with moto IQ (shame on you) they had a great article on it.
